Anger is not the emotion most women expect after a positive pregnancy test, but it’s one of the most common. If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, you may feel angry at your boyfriend, at yourself, or at how unfair the timing feels. You might even feel guilty for being upset. But anger doesn’t make you a bad mom. It often means you’re overwhelmed and trying to make sense of a life-changing moment.

At Birthright of Memphis, you don’t have to carry this alone. Our trained volunteers and paid employees support women every day through their pregnancy, serving nearly 175 moms at a time. We offer free, confidential support, free lab-quality pregnancy testing on-site, and ongoing mentoring to help you feel encouraged and prepared throughout your pregnancy journey.

Why Am I So Angry?

Anger can come from many places. Sometimes it’s a response to feeling trapped, judged, or afraid of the future. Other times, it’s connected to disappointment, grief, or feeling like your plans have been disrupted.

According to the American Psychological Association, stress can trigger strong emotional reactions, including irritability, anger, and emotional overwhelm, especially during major life changes. These feelings do not define the kind of mother you will be. They often reflect that you are navigating something significant.

Recognizing anger as a normal stress response can help you release self-blame and focus on the support you need right now.

How Can I Cope With Anger in a Healthy Way?

You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. But you also don’t have to let anger control your decisions. A few simple steps can help:

  • Talk to someone safe who won’t pressure you
  • Write down what you’re feeling instead of bottling it up
  • Take breaks, rest, and eat regularly (stress hits harder when you’re exhausted)
  • Focus on one small step at a time instead of trying to solve everything today

If you’re not sure where to start, Birthright of Memphis is a supportive place to talk through what you’re feeling and begin making a plan.

How Can I Prepare for Motherhood When I Feel Overwhelmed?

At Birthright of Memphis, women can take part in the Baby Steps program, where you can build knowledge and confidence throughout your pregnancy journey. You’ll receive monthly check-ins for support, and in your second trimester, you’ll be invited to a celebration breakfast where you’ll be encouraged, loved on, and gifted items like maternity clothes, special gifts, and giveaways, along with the chance to connect with other moms.

Near the end of pregnancy, Baby Steps classes cover practical topics like labor and delivery, breastfeeding, infant CPR and first aid, and baby basics. After completing the classes, moms receive baby bundles with helpful newborn essentials near the end of pregnancy.
