First, Was It Discrimination?
Before you begin gathering your resources and applying for programs, assess whether or not your recent job loss was due to your pregnancy. While you can still be fired due to performance issues or let go due to restructuring, you cannot be legally fired due to pregnancy.
If you think your pregnancy was the cause, contact an employment lawyer. They’ll be able to tell you whether or not you have a good case.
File for Unemployment
If you didn’t lose your job due to misconduct or quitting, you likely will qualify for unemployment benefits. Make sure to apply as soon as possible because it can take time for the benefits to take effect. If you’re in Tennessee, you can apply here.
Apply for Health Coverage and Other Benefits
Now that you have less income, you likely qualify for Medicaid coverage even if you might not have qualified in the past. This will ensure your prenatal care can continue. Tennessee Medicaid can also cover your labor and delivery expenses, hospital stay, and your baby’s newborn care.
You may also qualify for programs like Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to ensure you can get healthy groceries during your pregnancy and after.
Talk with Your Support System
Who do you have in your corner? Talk with your family and friends about your situation and see if they can help. They may offer to have you stay with them or support you in other ways.
If you don’t have family or a steady support system, talk with us. We can offer you personalized assistance for your circumstances.
Assess Your Situation
Once you apply for the resources you have available, you can gain a better understanding of your current situation. You’ll know how much income assistance you’ll have coming in and for how long.
Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, you may have time to apply for jobs. It may be difficult to get another job if you are due very soon, but if you can, it’s helpful to update your resume and begin networking with connections and potential employers. If you’re looking for an hourly position, you can research jobs with the best rates and benefits, and ask for more information.
